Whole cell and enzymatic production of aldehydes and their biocompatible conversion to dinitroalkanes

Abstract
Aldehydes are commonly used as intermediates in chemical syntheses or directly in pharmaceuticals or as flavors and fragrances. However, their isolation from plants is resource intensive, and their synthetic preparation requires harsh operating conditions. Emerging efforts have focused the production of bio-aldehydes via enzymatic oxidation, reduction, or via de novo metabolic pathways. Here, we catalog the different ways to synthesize aldehydes with enzymatic and whole-cell systems. We further describe their one-pot conversion to dinitroalkanes via a novel 4-step hybrid enzymatic and organocatalytic reaction cascade.
