dc.description.abstract | Power plant buildings and an elevated rail line in the foreground are shown at the Penokee Mine. The Penokee Mine is an underground iron mine in the Gogebic Range, Gogebic County, Michigan. The original mines in the Penokee Group were opened about 1884. The Group was producing into the 1950s. The Oliver Iron Mining Company was organized in 1892 and acquired a number of mineral properties in the Upper Peninsula. By 1901 the Company was a division of United States Steel Corporation. | |
