Abstract
The Upper Mississippi River Valley region was being prospected for lead in the 1820s, and by the 1850s had become an important lead-producing area. Zinc ores, previously discarded, were later identified as valuable, and by the 1870s zinc production exceeded that of lead. The last zinc mine in the area closed in the 1970s. The Platteville area was an important producer and had its first smelter by 1828.
