Abstract
Photograph showing the interior of the Cowenhoven Mining Drainage and Transportation Tunnel in Aspen, Pitkin County, Colorado. Prospectors discovered silver-lead deposits in the Aspen area in 1879 and the mining town of Aspen was well established by 1880. During the late 1880s the Cowenhoven Tunnel Company was founded to build a tunnel to the principal mines on Smuggler Mountain. Construction of the tunnel began on July 29, 1889 and it was completed on July 29, 1891. The 4,000 foot long tunnel drained and ventilated the mines, and the ores from the mines were transported through the tunnel to the railway for shipment to the mills and smelters.
