Abstract
The Mountain Consolidated Mine (Mountain Con Mine, Con Mine) in Butte, Montana was operated by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company. It was the deepest mine on Butte Hill. The Anaconda Copper Mining Company was formed in 1899 as the Amalgamated Copper Company after the discovery of copper in Butte, Montana. The Company acquired the area's mining properties and became the largest company in Montana. The Anaconda Company's smelter in the Deer Lodge Valley (Anaconda) was built in 1902. Anaconda Copper merged with ARCO in 1977. The Anaconda Smelter closed in ~1981 and ARCO closed all its Butte mining operations in 1983. Both the Company's Berkley pit mine and Anaconda Smelter were later declared Superfund sites.
