Abstract
A miner works a car mover at rails on the site of the Mahoning Mine. The Mahoning Mine is an open pit iron mine in the Mesabi Range, St. Louis County, Minnesota. It started shipping ore in 1895. The Mahoning Mine is part of the Hull Rust Mahoning operations of a series of connected open pit iron mines near Hibbing, Minnesota. The Mine group became one of the most important iron ore producers in the US in the 1940s. The present pit was being operated by the Hibbing Taconite Company as of 2004 and is reputed to be the world's largest open pit iron mine.
