An adit in the bottom left side of the island is visible. The Hill-Annex Mine was an open pit iron mine in the Mesabi Range, Minnesota. The Mine started shipping ore in 1914 under Inter-State Iron Company and operated until 1978, producing some 63 million tons of ore.
