Because distributed wastewater treatment plants generally have a lower buffering capacity, pollutants pose a greater threat to the microbial community, which can greatly affect the quality of effluent water. Nitrification and denitrification are essential processes of biological wastewater treatment for the conversion of nitrogen from ammonium to atmospheric N2.
