dc.description(No. 7) 'Gray's Peak' was so named after Gray, the eminent botanist, by Dr. Parry, who some years ago spent a summer in botanical research in this part of the Rocky Mountains. He found our highest mountains, which rear their apparently bald heads high above the line where trees cease to grow, richest in the variety of their vegetation. The elevation of this peak above the level of the sea, is 14,257 feet. It is the highest peak in Northern Colorado, being higher than Pike's, or Long's, and is one of the highest on the Continent. The view is taken at timber line, from the wagon road, down the western slope to the head of Snake river, one of the remote heads of the Colorado, where the waters flow to the Gulf of California. For the first time ever known, the snow has nearly disappeared from its sides--Verso.
