Stereopair showing two of the ten amalgamating pans at the Caribou Mill, Boulder County, Colorado. The amalgamated silver from these pans was sent to the melting room for retorting and pouring into bars. The Caribou Mill was built in 1870-1871 along Boulder Creek in Nederland, four miles from the Caribou Mine. The ore was transported by wagon from the mine to the mill. The mill, when running at full capacity, could handle twenty tons of ore per day, but the crash of the silver market in 1893 led to its closure. Sometime in the early 1900s, the mill was reopened to process tungsten ore, and its name was changed to the Wolf Tongue Mill. When the mill burned to the ground in 1926, it was quickly rebuilt, and it continued to operate until after World War II.
