dc.description.abstractMiners charge holes after drilling at the Velva Mine. A portable drill mounted on a small wagon is shown in the foreground. The Velva Mine was an open cut (open pit) coal mine near Velva, North Dakota. The Mine was operated by Truax-Traer Coal Company. Truax-Traer operated a number of coal mines using strip mining techniques in North Dakota and other states. The Company was purchased by Consolidation Coal Company in 1962.
