A miner stands next to explosives boxes labeled "EXPLOSIVES DANGER" in the Ahmeek No. 4 Mine. A ventilation tube runs along the wall behind him. The Ahmeek Mine near Hubbell, Michigan was an underground copper mine in the Keweenaw Peninsula. The Mine opened in 1902 and the Ahmeek stamp mill was in operation by 1910. The Mine was operated by the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Company after 1922. Operations at the Ahmeek site ended in the late 1960s. Calumet & Hecla, based in Calumet in the Keweenaw Range, was one of the largest copper producing companies in the US.
