The Lake shaft of the Cleveland Mine may refer to what became the Cleveland Lake Mine. The Cleveland Mine near Ishpeming in the Marquette Range was opened in 1849 and was one of the first mines located in the Lake Superior region. It had shipped ore from its pit operations by 1852 and transported the ore by sled up to 1854. The Cleveland produced ore until 1898, and later became a part of the Morro and Cliffs Shaft mines. The Cleveland Lake Mine (Lake Mine) was opened by the Cleveland Iron Mining Company and shipped its first ore in 1889. It was the first mine in the Upper Peninsula to operate using electrical power, under the management of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company in 1892.
