    Abstract
Aerial view of Ajo, the Ajo smelter, and the Ajo Mine in the background. The Phelps Dodge Mining Company's Ajo Incorporated (PDAI) copper smelter was built in 1950 near the mining town of Ajo, Pima County, Arizona. It was used by Phelps Dodge to test innovative smelting technologies in the 1970s and 1980s, and finally closed in 1985. The smelter was dismantled by 1996. The Ajo (New Cornelia) copper mine was under development by 1911 by Col. John C. Greenway. Greenway bought up copper mining options in the area to extract the low grade ore by steam shovel. The open pit mine eventually became the property of Phelps Dodge and was operated until 1985.
