dc.description.abstract | Two miners stand in a coyote hole for blasting preparations at the Hill-Annex Mine site. A coyote hole is a small tunnel driven into the rock at right angles to the pit wall, with crosscuts from it parallel to the face. Explosive charges are placed in the crosscuts and the hole filled with debris or concrete to tamp it for the blast. The Hill-Annex Mine was an open pit iron mine in the Mesabi Range, Minnesota. The Mine started shipping ore in 1914 under Inter-State Iron Company and operated until 1978, producing some 63 million tons of ore. After the Hill-Annex was closed the pit flooded, and the site became a state park in 1988. | |
