The Mississippi #2 Mine was originally an underground iron mine from 1933 into the 1950s, and later operated as an open pit taconite mine. The Mine was part of the Mississippi Mine Group. The Mississippi mines include the old Mississippi Mine and consist of a group of open pit and underground iron mines Keewatin in the Mesabi Range, Itasca County, Minnesota. The mines were operated by the Hanna Ore Mining Company (M. A. Hanna Company) into the 1950s. The M. A. Hanna Company was one of the large mining companies that moved into the iron areas of the Lake Superior region in the early 1900s, consolidating smaller properties and engaging in exploration for other economic deposits. The Company was dissolved in 1965, then resurrected in 1985.
