    Abstract
A miner cuts coal using an arc-wall mining machine underground at the Knife River Mine. The Knife River Mine, an underground coal mine south of Beulah, North Dakota, was operated by the Knife River Mining Company. Around 1950 the Mine's shallow underground workings were discontinued and the Mine continued operation as a strip mine. The last underground mine in North Dakota closed in 1966. The Knife River Mine was one of a handful of surface coal mines still in operation in 2003.
