The Synthetic Fuels Quarterly Report provides summary articles on the status of development of synthetic fuels from oil shale, oil sand, and coal, as well as issues of general interest to the synthetic fuels technical community. From the Preface: With this issue we have changed the title of our report to "Synthetic Fuels". We believe the new title is more appropriate for this report than was the former title, "Oil Shale and Related Fuels". The title change is recognition on our part that the former title placed unjustified emphasis on oil shale. Coal and tar sands have achieved at least equal status with oil shale as source materials for synthetic fuels . Another change inaugurated with this issue is the inclusion of our comments on the significance of current events and problems and their impact on the development of oil shale, tar sands and coal. These may be found imprinted on the colored divider sheets which precede the oil shale, tar sands and coal sections of this report.
