Oil shales of the world, their origin, occurrence and exploitationOil shales and shale oil has known and used by historic man. These materials, under one name or another are found all over the world, and new deposits are reported frequently. Worldwide resources are very large and a rough estimate indicates that oil shales occurring in at least 50 countries may contain in excess of 2,000 trillion (10 x 10(12)) barrels of oil in place. The first modern attempts at commercial production began in the 1780-1860 period. The largest operations were in Scotland, Australia, France, Russia, and China. The Scottish industry operated for over 100 years. Currently Russia and China are the principal producers of oil shale and shale oil but utilization is either in the planning or construction stage in other countries. The efforts and equipment used to utilize this resource since its earliest recognition are discussed. The location, origin, locality and extent of resource is presented for most of the worlds known deposits. Plans for future use are noted where available.

Synthetic liquid fuels from oil shale, tar sands, and coal; proceedings of the Hydrocarbon SymposiumThe papers delivered at the Hydrocarbons Symposium in Denver on February 18 and 19, 1970, are presented in this volume. All phases of the search for commercial processes for the production of synthetic liquid fuels from oil shales, tar sands, and coal are included. This symposium and its predecessor, the Oil Shale Symposium, have served to bring together people working in all areas of the synthetic fuel industry and to acquaint them with the legal, real estate, water, and political problems as well as technical questions. This industry is still struggling to get established and many of its major problems are legal and political rather than technical. Thanks are extended to the authors for presenting their papers and to their companies for permitting the information to be released. These symposia have been successful and worthwhile owing to their efforts and those of the Hydrocarbons Committee of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers. Sponsored by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, the Colorado School of Mines, and the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute / Includes bibliographical references.
