Two men stand at the base of the destroyed headframe of the Tonopah-Belmont Mine. Silver was discovered on the future site of Tonopah in 1900 and the site quickly became a booming camp. The Tonopah-Belmont Mining Company was formed in 1902. In 1911 a fire broke out at the bottom of the Belmont shaft and 17 men died from the fire's toxic fumes. The Tonopah-Belmont Mine was reopened and continued to produce silver and gold until another fire closed the Mine in 1939.
