This is probably the Ironton Sintering Plant. The low grade iron ore mined in the Cuyuna Range starting in about 1911 required a special process of sintering to make it more marketable. The Ironton Sintering Plant was built for this purpose and was one of the largest beneficiation plants in the US. The M. A. Hanna Company was one of the large mining companies that moved into the iron areas of the Lake Superior region in the early 1900s, consolidating smaller properties and engaging in exploration for other economic deposits. The Company was dissolved in 1965, then resurrected in 1985.
