dc.description.abstractA miner stands on a platform for a chute underground at the Homestake Mine. A car is below the chute. The Homestake Mine is an underground gold mine in the the Whitewood district (Lead district) of the Black Hills, South Dakota. The Homestake is located on the largest known gold deposit of its kind and was the largest gold producer from a single deposit in North or South America. The Homestake lode was discovered in 1876 and the Homestake Mining Company was formed in 1879. The Mine has operated from 1876 to 2001. In 2001 Homestake Mining Company merged with Barrick Gold and Homestake Mine operations were shut down. Mine depths reached 2,440 meters, and after its closure the Mine flooded.
