Image from Book 4, Rio Grande Railroad covered album. Captions read: "3350"; "Slime Filling - Gilman Mine Fire Area." Accompanying text reads: "Murley, J. A., Jr. Jan 3, 1947 notes: slime filling, Gilman mine fire area (Slimes are a mixture of fine dolomite sand, chocolate Rock (a local name)) and water. The slimes vary in density from 25% to 50% solids. The sand and rock is obtained from a sand caving station in the mine. It is then dumped into a waste pass which carries it down to the mixing bin seen in the center of this picture. The sand stops against an arc gate in the chute seen at the end of the stream of water, as the sand is washed through the screen (see #3351) the water releases more sand from the arc gate, thereby feeding the sand as it is washed down and mixed with water. Into this mixing bin, at the bottom, is piped air which is released thru perforations in the pipe; this keeps the slimes constantly frothed and well mixed, i. e. it keeps any of the sands from settling in the mixing binches Slimes from this mixing bin flow, via 2 inch pipe to all fire seals that can be reached by gravity; but the on the back side of the mixing bin is a grout pump used for pumping slimes to seals that can not be reached by gravity flow."
