dc.description.abstractStereopair of Golden City showing the store buildings on Washington Street, and the view is looking towards Clear Creek. This photograph was probably taken in the 1870s. Golden City was founded in 1859 with the discovery of gold in a tributary of Clear Creek. Thousands of people descended on the area and Golden City was laid out at the mouth of Clear Creek Canyon as a supply town. The town was renamed Golden in 1872. This stereopair shows several of the earliest store buildings that were built on Washington Street. The man on the right was standing in front of the Avenue Hotel, and the building with the porch next door is the City Restaurant. The first building on the left was called the Everett Block, named after a mayor of Golden and built in 1873. The next building with the sign, "Goods, Clothing & C," is the Loveland Block, which still stands at 1122 Washington, and it was built in 1863. It was owned by W.A.H. Loveland.
