Abstract
On January 9th, 2021, much of Pakistan was hit by a massive 18-hour power blackout that left much of the country's 200 million people in the dark. It took several days to restore the nation wide shut down. The capital Islamabad, and most major cities were affected in what was one of the biggest power failures globally. However, Pakistan has faced several large-scale blackouts in the past decade due to reoccurring problems with its national transmission and distribution systems. According to the country's Energy Minister, the blackout was due to a technical fault at a thermal power plant in Sindh province. This came as part of communications meant to assuage public concerns about terror attacks. In 2015, 80 percent of Pakistan lost electricity due to an attack on one of its major transmission lines.
