Abstract
Denver was founded on the banks of Cherry Creek, an insignificant stream bed, and settlers built along the “bottoms” near the active stream channel as Denver grew. After a period of heavy rainfall up the Cherry Creek watershed, on the night of May 19, 1864 the city of Denver was hit by its first recorded flood. The flood swept away buildings, livestock and trees and caused the death of a number of people.
