Abstract
Photograph of the Monument #2 mine showing four miners standing on the stockpiles of carnotite ore and shoveling it into wheelbarrows. This mine was located north of Kayenta, Arizona and owned by the Vanadium Corporation of America (V.C.A.). It was one of the largest producers of carnotite ore during the uranium boom of the 1950s, and the ore from this mine was trucked to the V.C.A. Durango Uranium-Vanadium Plant where uranium concentrate (yellow cake) and vanadium concentrate (red cake) were extracted from it.
