Abstract
Equipment is photographed to illustrate the installation of safety catches at the Empire Mines, California. Gold was discovered in Grass Valley in 1850. The Empire Mine operated from 1850 to 1956 and was one of the richest and largest mines in the US, producing some 5.8 million ounces of gold. The Mine site was acquired by the State of California in 1975 and turned into a state park.
