Abstract
Postcard showing a painting of Telluride, Colorado. Promising gold discoveries in 1875 resulted in a rush of prospectors to the area. The town of Telluride (originally Columbia) was established in 1878. The Telluride district was one of the top gold producers in the US by the 1880s. The arrival of a rail line in about 1890 allowed ore to be shipped to smelters more economically and led to a period of renewed activity. Mining in Telluride declined in the 1900s and most of the mines closed by the 1920s, but a few mines were still producing through the 1950s. In all, the mines around Telluride are estimated to have produced close to a quarter billion dollars worth of silver and gold.
