Abstract
This document describes how 445nm laser diodes were successfully used to pump a soft aperture Kerr lens mode-locked Ti:sapphire oscillator. Measurements were taken in order to determine the mechanism behind the mode-locking bias in these oscillators. It was determined that the gain was higher for the mode-locked mode of operation even though the 1/e[superscript 2] radius of the pump was larger than the 1/e[superscript 2] radius of both the CW and mode-locked modes in the crystal. This indicates that the 1/e[superscript 2] radius of the beams is not enough information to determine if mode-locking will occur and an accurate model will need to take the full beam profile into account.
