Abstract
It is well understood that permanently plugging old, abandoned oil and gas wells in the U.S. can make a big impact in our nation's efforts to combat global warming. Recent estimates suggest that nationally, annual methane emissions from unplugged wells are equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions in a range from a CO₂ equivalent of 7-20 million metric tons per year (approximately the emissions of 2 to 5 million cars) annually.
