Abstract
Akron and Erie plant, Callahan Lead-Zinc Company, Tomichi District (Whitepine District), Gunnison County. Caption reads: "This photograph shows the complete surface layout of the Callahan Lead-Zinc Company's Akron and Erie mining recovery plant. Locations indicated are (1) new sawmill, (2) vehicle garage, (3) buildings at mouth of mine including compressor room, machine shop, blacksmith shop and powder room. Long shed at right is covered tracks to take ore to mill. (4) is dry room where the men change clothing going into and coming out of the mine. (5) is dump where ore from Erie mine is dumpled and then hauled down to the mill. (6) is executive offices of company. (7) shows settling pond for mill tailings, one of two at the site, (8) is assay office and (9) is mill where silver-zinc and silver-lead concentrates are separated for shipment to the refinery. The mill handles about 80 tons of ore per day."
