Abstract
Photograph showing the train stopped at Ibex with Trainmaster McGinnis standing on top of one of the train cars. Some of Ibex's mine buildings are visible in the background. The Ibex Mining Company was founded in the 1880s and purchased the Little Jonny Mine and a number of adjacent claims on Breece Hill east of Leadville. Vast quantities of high grade gold and copper were discovered. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad built a line to Ibex in 1898 to transport supplies and workers to the mines and ore to the Arkansas Valley Smelter. The train could pull 60 ore cars at one time. After World War I, the mining industry in Leadville began to decline due to low world metal prices and other factors. The Ibex's Little Jonny Mine was one of the few mines in the Leadville area that continued to operate. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad closed down the Ibex Branch line in 1944.
