Abstract
A man operates a hitch-cutting machine underground at the Robert Gage #10 Mine. A hitch-cutting machine is used to cut places in the coal or rock to rest timbers used to support the mine workings. The Robert Gage #10 Mine is an underground coal mine in Tuscola County, Michigan. Coal deposits were explored in the Bay region in the late 1800s and coal mining was active there until the 1920s-1930s. The Robert Gage #10 Mine appears to be the only coal mine in Tuscola County.
