Abstract
Photograph showing the Freighter's Friend Mine and the small town of Gilson Gulch, which were located in a gulch at the base of Seaton Mountain northeast of Idaho Springs. Note the school children standing on top of a tailings pile in the photograph. Gilson Gulch was founded by the Gilson family in the late 1870s or early 1880s following the discovery of a rich gold-bearing lode. The small town, which was composed mostly of Italians along with a few Frenchmen and Germans, was built in close proximity to the mines. Gilson Gulch was never incorporated and probably never had more than 100 - 200 residents. In 1893, the Dumont family arrived in Gilson Gulch and built a small hotel (shown in the photograph) and a saloon. The Freighter's Friend Mine was discovered by Captain Jack in 1866, and it was located on the Gem-Franklin vein. In addition to Freighter's Friend, there were a number of mines on the hillsides surrounding Gilson Gulch, including the Gem, Dove's Nest, Garden, Franklin mines, which were all located on the Gem-Franklin vein, became the Consolidated Franklin Mine, and over their entire histories approximately 125,000 ounces of gold.
