Abstract
Photograph probably taken during the 1920s showing an unidentified mine and other buildings in Idaho Springs. They may have belonged to the Gem Mining Company. Gold placers were reported in the area in 1859 and the area was inundated by prospectors. For a time Idaho Springs was the county seat of Clear Creek County. The town's population reached a peak in the 1860s. Silver was discovered in the area in 1865. By 1902 Idaho Springs had twenty-two operating mills. Tunnel projects kept the mines operating for a time but activity was in decline by the time this photograph was taken.
