Publication What types of sources provide citations to dissertations and theses?(2024-09-26) Kraus, Joseph R.; Baker, ChristineIn order to determine the reach and usage of a specific set of about 65 doctoral dissertations and master’s theses that were produced at the Colorado School of Mines from 2007 to 2023, the authors used Google Scholar to determine how many times each of those dissertations and theses had been cited. They also determined what types of sources (such as journal articles, books, conference papers, technical reports, government documents, etc.) cite those publications. Donner (2021) had found that “there are few publications on citation analysis of Ph.D. theses as the cited documents, as opposed to studies of the documents cited in theses, of which there are plenty.” Thus, this short talk aims to briefly expand what is known about how researchers cite dissertations and theses.Publication Supporting open science on a small budget: the role of the Mines Repository(Colorado School of Mines. Arthur Lakes Library) Bongiovanni, Emily; Kraus, Joseph; Colorado School of Mines; Carnegie Mellon UniversityThis poster presents usage data on institutional repositories at research intensive institutions across the United States and South Africa. Both Mines and CMU host institutional repositories to disseminate their communities’ scholarly outputs. This poster compares CMU and Mines with each other as well as with other academic institutions in South Africa. Various elements on the institution, their libraries, and their repositories were compared. We used data on institutional repositories, including size, content type, and numbers of repositories for our comparisons. Data considered in these comparisons also included institution-level data, such as student enrollment.Publication Introducing Primo VE: streamline back-end administration(Colorado School of Mines. Primo VE provides unified back office management of Primo and Alma, resulting in a reduction of duplicated administrative processes and providing seamless publishing processes, real-time discovery of records created in Alma, and the task-oriented configuration and setup that many libraries already enjoy for other library workflows in Alma. Primo VE provides an enhanced user experience for both patrons and staff. But what is the impact for libraries, publishers, and users? In this session, an academic librarian and an information provider discuss whether the increased usage of library discovery systems has had an impact on the usage of their material. What drives usage, how can we measure it, and what have we learned? The Colorado School of Mines will present results from the library perspective and draw conclusions about the impact of the increased usage of discovery systems on the role libraries play in supporting teaching, learning, and research. Alexander Street Press will discuss how collaboration with discovery vendors impacts the usage on their platform, obstacles they have encountered on the way, and lessons they have learned for the future.Publication Cool beans discovery - Primo VE(Colorado School of Mines. Arthur Lakes Library) Guy, LauraCOUNTER data help libraries count usage of their electronic resources. For years we have used UStat to manage these data and report on user activity. But in 2017 that all changed when this function was greatly expanded and enhanced and integrated into Alma. The presenter was a development partner for this transformation. Come learn how you can start taking advantage of this fantastic new capability. We’ll have a quick intro to COUNTER, a discussion of new Alma roles, we’ll learn about the Data Usage Loader and loading data both manually or via SUSHI, and we’ll look at the amazing new Analytics reports available to help you do collection development and more. There will be plenty of time for questions. In brief the included files provide the workflow to generate the necessary Analytics reports, then use Excel and UltraEdit (or text editor of your choice) to make changes to the files so they can be put in static web pages. The readme file includes a URL to the final product - a web page containing new titles lists. Attend this session to understand how we are leveraging data and technology to create new avenues of resource discovery, and how one library has worked with the limited resources available to them to take advantage of these developments and make the most out of their discovery system. Arthur Lakes Library) Guy, LauraImplementing a library services platform such as Alma with Primo can be a major undertaking. Replacing an ILS, link resolver, ERM, and possibly other systems with a unified platform calls for rethinking workflows, retraining staff, cleaning up and migrating data, and an array of other potential areas of analysis. These can range from rethinking what patron services are offered to reviewing collaboration opportunities between or within libraries. Planning to make all of these changes within the duration of the implementation project is a challenge--both because of the scope of the changes, and because improvements in library services should continue on the new library platform. Instead, implementation can be viewed as one activity in the evolution of library services, with continuous advances before and after the implementation project. This eases the transition and allows the library to plan future improvements based on opportunities afforded by the new systems. In this session, two libraries that implemented Alma and Primo will share their perspectives on the lifecycle of system implementation. From planning, preparing, and implementing the platform to post-implementation analysis of workflows, come hear how an implementation project fits into the broader process of improving library services.Publication Making Alma work for you: optimize service at the Colorado School of Mines(Colorado School of Mines. Come learn about this exciting and important new Service, why the Library decided to embark upon such an adventure, the ways staff prepared for traveling this route, and how Mines planned significant improvements to workflows, services and configurations as a result of the Service's recommendations. Was the journey a success? All will be revealed!Publication Alma up! The keys to a successful Alma migration in a not so huge library(Colorado School of Mines. Join us as we share our migration experiences, including the many lessons learned during our Alma implementations. We will discuss timelines, project management, choosing a migration team, data preparation and cleanup, communication and training, workflows, certification, configuration, and more. We will also describe surprises we encountered, what went right during our migrations, and what we wish we could do-over.
